DALE JARRETT'S 2005 STAR WARS Taurus

Even though Dale Jarrett's father won two championships and was very successful in the mid-'60s, not much of that rubbed off on Dale initially. He just thought it was fun to go to the racetrack and play with other drivers' children there, such as Kyle Petty, Richard Petty's son. He never dreamed it would become his vocation.

In fact, Jarrett wasn't sure what the heck he wanted to be after graduating high school. All he was sure about was that he loved playing sports. He was the star quarterback at Newton-Conover High School. And star forward on the basketball team, star shortstop on the baseball team, and star golfer.

But at age 20, he tried his hand at it, and discovered he had the ability and desire to race stock cars. But the first several years were mighty lean. Finally, with Joe Gibbs, and now Yates, he has shown the potential he had.

But, after he claimed the WINSTON CUP Championship for the first (and only to date) time in his career in 1999, Dale had been mostly a mid-pack runner until 2005. 2005 has been a good year so far for Dale. As of this writing at the end of July, he is sitting in 10th place, behind team mate Elliott Sadler, and with consistant runs, looks to be in the NEXTEL Chase for the Cup at Loudon. It appears that both Yates and Roush racing finally have the revised Taurus working well! Too bad they'll need to start over again in 06 with the FUSION...

The model shown is the car DJ drove at Phoenix under the lights in April, 2005,in the SUBWAY FRESH 500, in a colour scheme promoting the soon-to-be-released sci-fi epic STARWARS - Revenge of the Sith. This is the JEDI "good guy" colour scheme - Team mate Sadler got to represent The Dark Side in this race... Shortly after the race, a file arrived from Sam, who had done yeoman's work, on this and the 38 version, to reproduce these graphics. They were designed to fit the 2000-2002 vintage Taurus from Revell, or, preferably, the more accurate 2004/05 –spec body available from Perry’s Resin in 1/24th. This body, in conjunction with the kit chassis, is recommended for maximum accuracy. This is the body in the pictures. You can contact Perry’s resin thru their website: www.perrysresin.com for more info on price and availability. (See my write-up on Matt Kenseth's SMIRNOFF car for more info... Click Here)

I primed and painted the entire body to match references, with a blend of TAMIYA TS16 Yellow, TS14 black, TS12 orange, and TS 8 Red, blended in a bottle to match references, and airbrushed on. Cowl and rear spoiler are black. (Note – when blending a brown, NEVER add white, it produces a “milky” look which cannot be overcome. Use yellow and orange to balance lightness and redness).

Chassis was built box stock, except for seatbelts, and the mandated dashboard ignition tray - again I used a piece from Modern Motorsports. To find out more about these and Modern Motorsports' other offerings, Click Here.

Once i had the paint applied and had allowed it to dry overnight, it was time for the fun part - decalling!

I found the order of decal application to be critical, particularly the first steps, while applying the giant “M&M’s" circles. I made sure to apply in order suggested by Sam on the decal sheet. I allowed them to dry for several hours, then applied other graphics, logos, etc.

Once all the decals were in place, and had had 24 hours or so to dry, I clearcoated them, applying successive light coats of clear (TS13, from warmed rattle-can, in LIGHT DUST COATS). After a day or two to dry, I polished it all up with terry cloth and Turtle Wax to a nice shine.

As is the 38 car, this is quite a spiff colour scheme, and a great addition to my shelves!

In the race, DJ started from the 35th position and finished one lap down, posting a 23rd place finish in the JEDI/UPS/M&M’S Ford Taurus.
