Terry Labonte's 2005 PIZZA HUT Monte Carlo

Terry Labonte, after winning the 1984 Championship, found himself "in the wilderness" for several years, until 1993, when the Hagan-owned team he drove for secured KELLOGG's as a sponsor. Altho 1993 started out well, it quickly fell apart, and for 1994, Terry had an opportunity to take himself and the Kellogg's money to the Hendrick organization, which was establishing itself with an upcoming driver, Jeff somebody or other... Terry had a good run at Hendrick, culminating in a second Championship in 1996. By the end of 2004, he had decided to give up fulltime driving, after a career that started in 1978. After relinquishing the 5 ride to Kyle Busch, Terry raced sporadically in the NEXTEL cup in 2005. He ran this paint scheme at Lowes in May of 2005 in the ALLSTAR Challenge, using his old 1984 Championship number.

Sam sent me these graphics, and after adding some tire decals, SIMPSON and MSD logos, and updating the contingencies, it was good to go. The base model, of course, is the REVELL 2004 Monte Carlo, in this case one of Jeffie's cars.

The body was primed with PlastiKote grey aerosol primer, then topcoated with GM black aerosol automotive touch-up lacquer (Canadian Tire). I then masked, primed and and painted the rear spoiler red (PlastiKote white primer...). (Looking back, painting it red BEFORE applying black, then masking it off, might have been simpler...) All the red “swoops” are on the decal sheet. I started the decal application by applying the “Swoops", and allowing to dry for several hours. Next, the fender contingency, roof and side numbers, and the pizza hut logos on rear quarterpanels were applied (and I have added the missing "COMMIT" logo to the driver side contingencies on the sheet...). The rest of the decals were then applied in no particular order. I included extra PIZZA HUT logos and numbers on the sheet, which I applied, to minimize effect of colour showthrough. The second set was overlaid on the first after a couple hours drying.

Once all the decals were in place, I let them dry for a couple days, and applied several LIGHT coats of TAMIYA TS13 clear (rattle can heated in warm tapwater for a fine spray), followed up a day later with TURTLE WAX polishing compound.

The chassis was built box-stock, except for seatbelts, and the mandated dashboard ignition tray - normally I use a piece from Modern Motorsports. To find out more about these and Modern Motorsports' other offerings, Click Here. But for this one I tried fabricating my own, using bits and pieces of evergreen plastic round and rectangular rod. Took a lot more time, but I was able to come up with something that will tide me over until I get more from Modern Motorsports...

Unfortunately, in the race, Terry got caught up in a multicar wreck on lap 35 of the first segment, finishing 19th at the end of the night. Later in the season, Terry also filled in for a few rides in the #11 Fedex car, the newly-minted third team for Joe Gibbs Racing, after they had tried both Jason Leffleur and J.J. Yaley with disappointing results. For 2006, Terry has signed on for 5 races with a new team, Hall of Fame Racing, thereby assuring them of starts in those races via his Champion's Provisional (shades of DW - 1999!...), a move that has some looking askance at NASCAR's Rules in this area...
