Another fine mess has developed in the ever-fascinating world of NASCAR sponsorships...the CINGULAR/AT&T/NEXTEL(SPRINT??)/NASCAR dust-up over sponsorship on Jeff Burton's Childress-owned #31 Monte Carlo.
So how did this particular quagmire develop? Typical mixing of NASCAR and corporate lawyers... read on...
Back in the WINSTON Era, Richard Childress had brought Cingular onto the #31 car with Robby Gordon. Jeff, who had left Roush for RCR in mid-2004 just before the Sirius at The Glen, signed a three-year contract with RCR, leaving Roush after eight and a half years with the team. He started out with RCR driving the #30 AOL Chevrolet for the rest of the '04 season. During the offseason, Burton and his team were switched to the #31 Cingular Wireless Chevy, replacing Robby Gordon, who had some "interesting times" with the team.
When NEXTEL took over from WINSTON, CINGULAR, as one of the sponsors that competed with NEXTEL, was "grandfathered" in... But no moves to another team were to be allowed, and no new potential competitors to NEXTEL would be allowed in.. NEXTEL's hope was that competing sponsors would just "go away"....sounds pretty simple, possibly a bit naive... but....
Meanwhile in the Boardrooms of America, business as usual ended up with CINGULAR being sold to AT&T, and the CINGULAR name flat out disappeared. Naturally, AT&T were desperate to get their logos on the flanks of the 31 in place of a defunct brand! AT&T's position was that a merge/acquisition/name change/whatever didn't constitute a new sponsorship, so the grandfather clause should still be valid. Both NASCAR and NEXTEL begged to differ, ganged up on poor little AT&T, and demanded they not use AT&T on the car. AT&T got an injunction to prevent them from blocking the use of the AT&T signage, and AT&T signage appeared on the car starting at the May Charlotte race, after the ALLSTAR race. .
When ATT&T finally got the injunction that allowed them to replace the CINGULAR logos with AT&T, I saw an opportunity to build a unique model... with all the appeals and other legal folderol, I figgered no diecasters would touch it, and we all know if it ain't Junior or Jeffie, no kit maker will touch it either... Thanks to Brandon Dunlop's 2005 CINGULAR graphics, I had a lot of the basic scheme, especially the black swoops and the door numbers that were good to go. It was a pretty simple matter, using references, to track down and reproduce the AT&T signage, and to update the sheet to 2007 specs. I had already done some of the basics for the 2006 ARMY car, and just had a few things, such as the MONTE CARLO SS for the nose, to work up in CorelDraw.

The starting kit was the 2006 #48 Monte from REVELL, built box-stock, except for a few tweaks for realism. I don't go in for the high detail levels many NASCAR builders do, I've found over the years the colour scheme and the challenge of the graphics are what I find the most interesting.
The body was primed with PLASTIKOTE white primer, and after a few days to dry, was wetsanded with 1500 grit then topcoated with several light coats of DayGlo Orange. I had to mask and paint the decklid, cowl and front valence black, as per references. I did put a few extra light coats of TAMIYA TS13 clear over the orange prior to masking and painting the black areas, as the orange dries very flat, and would not accept decals well without silvering. The finished paint job then recieved a couple further coats of clear.
While all this was in play, I worked on the graphics. It was all pretty simple to do, but there was one challenge - the roof number is also Dayglo orange, so I made a black roof-sized decal, with a the number 31 included, being clear in the center with a white surround. The theory was it would lay down over the orange roof and give a much brighter colour than the ALPS printing process could ever achieve. This is the same procedure I used for the green number on the roof of Mayfield's #19 Mountain Dew Intrepid a couple builds back - click HERE to check it out.
All in all, it worked very well. The first graphics to go on were the "swoops" and the roof decal; after they were dried in place, the hood, rear deck, and TV panel decals were added, including head and tail light decals, and grilles. Then I started each side, with the fender contingency decals first, then the door numbers, then the AT&T logo and lettering, from front to back, making sure I put them all on in a short time, so I could arrange them properly for spacing. Then the final decals for "B" and "C" pillars, driver name were put on.
After it had all dried for 24 hours, I applied several light coats of TAMIYA TS13 clear from the warmed rattlecan, and after a further 48 hours, it was lightly sanded with 1500-grit paper, then polished with Turtle Wax compound.

As of this writing, the chassis is not complete, so I mounted it on another "mule" chassis for photo purposes. (It requires a LOT of discipline to not just stick the body on the shelf, and go on to the next one! I fell into that trap a couple years back, and found myself with the NNL East coming up, and I was short 3 chassis! Live and learn...)
So far this has been a short-lived colour scheme - at least the sponsor logo part - about 14 races! In June, NASCAR announced a $100 million dollar lawsuit against AT&T and that they wanted AT&T and all other telecommunications companies out of the sport in 2008. To this end, NASCAR and NEXTEL appealed, got the injunction reversed or thrown out, just prior to Bristol in August. So...., at the direction of AT&T, the car showed up there, with NO logos - just the black and orange colour scheme... Burton's pit crew wore grey Richard Childress Racing shirts and Burton wore a plain orange fire suit displaying only small associate sponsor logos. The car arrived in a black hauler with only the number 31 on the side. NASCAR officials said the car would not have made it through inspection with the AT&T logos on it. Jeeeezzz... can't we all just get along?? (I felt that it was all kind of ironic, as I had just finished the body for the model....)
It ran that way this past week at California as well... Looks like Childress/AT&T is making a point... we all know what SHOULD be on the car but for the lawyers... you gotta wonder if NEXTEL/NASCAR aren't shooting themselves in the foot, drawing more attention for AT&T than if they just left it alone... kinda reminds me of McLaren in Formula 1, running 8 little black rectangles on thair cars in Europe a few years back, when MARLBORO was banned from advertising on the cars... we all KNEW what they stood for...
Meantime - unperturbed by all the legalistic sabre-rattling, Burton and his crew soldier on, holding down a solid 7th place in the 2007 standings with one to go before the Chase cutoff, and well placed for thee Chase...
I have no idea what the next step is; according to Scenedaily.com on Aug 24th, AT&T was expected to file a motion seeking another injunction with hopes of a hearing the week of Sept. 10th.
It will be real fun to see NASCAR's dance when NEXTEL gets bored with them and decides to take their money elsewhere... I know what my response would be to their advances if I were AT&T or ALLTEL...Isn't NASCAR EXCITING??!!!
