Robbie Gordon's 2001 NATIONSRENT Taurus

Quote from Lou:
"...the Jim Smith owned Nation's Rent #7 Taurus driven by Robbie Gordon in the 2001 Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point. Robbie Gordon, Kevin Harvick, and Tony Stewart were involved in what became my favorite race finish of the 2001 season. Near the end of the race Robbie Gordon was leading and Tony Stewart was in second, but between them was Kevin Harvick, a lap down and desperately wanting that lap back from Gordon.

As much as Harvick wanted to pass, Gordon was determined to keep him behind as a shield against Tony Stewart. In spite of pleas from his pit to let Harvick by, Gordon aggressively blocked every effort Harvick made to pass. Gordon's stubbornness wore heavily on his tires, and only laps from the end Harvick got beside him. Their cars grated against each other, and as both lost momentum Stewart shot by both of them. Having used up his tires in an ill-advised duel with Harvick, Gordon had nothing left with which to chase down Tony Stewart who went on to win the race.

I had both Harvick's and Stewart's cars in my diecast collection but never found Robbie's #7. To complete this entertaining trio I had to make my own Nation's Rent Ford. "

More from Lou:
"Several years ago I began collecting 1/64th scale diecast race cars. The collection grew, and as I learned more about NASCAR history I realized that certain historical cars would never be available for purchase. Over time I discovered that older model cars like those once raced on NASCAR tracks were available in 1/64th scale. These could be repainted and decorated and added to the collection, and this I have done.

With a computer and a printer I have been able to add 'impossible' cars to my race car collection.

This is not to say that I am a great modeler. Far from it. But I do see potential in the 1/64th scale medium. It can be challenging because source cars are often not easy to find, and are often not plentiful when they are available. There does not seem to be a network of aftermarket parts like wheels or decals to use. You pretty much make what you need for a project. The problems are not insurmountable, and when you look at some of the source cars available, it's fun to see how close you can get to the pictures you're working from.
