Jeff Gordon's 1991 "PENROSE" BGN Olds !!

Quote from Jay:
"...a rare Jeff Gordon car. Not too many people know about this one; he only drove it in one race. It is the #1 "Penrose" Oldsmobile that he drove in the Busch race at Martinsville on October 27th, 1991.

Jeff started 27th and finished 8th. The race was won by Harry Gant. Jeff wrecked his car so he borrowed one from Bobby Labonte because he didn't have a back up car and he was running for Rookie of the Year. He took Bobby's #44 Penrose car changed numbers, made some sponsor changes, etc. He also wrecked the car during the race. I got a "colorful" version of how that happened but I cannot repeat it on a family internet!

The car itself was pretty straight forward to build. I had to modify the front end to allow for an extra grill opening. The "window straps" required some changes also.

Finding the decals proved to be very time consuming. I finally found the "Penrose" decals from an old JNJ sheet. Once I got pictures of the car I noticed quite a bit of difference between Bobby's decals and Jeff's decals. I've probably got nine decal sheets tied up in this car. I had to buy a whole sheet just for one small decal more than once. I also had to change the outline on the number's 1. They had to be black instead of the usual red.

I've got about 18 months tied up in this car. Most of that time is just in research alone. I could not have done this car without the help of so many people. This one was really a community effort. I want to thank all of those people and especially Michael Rumpf, Bob Labonte Sr., Taylor Warren, David Poole, and Bill Marks! I even got to "talk" to Jeff Gordon himself about it on a chat one night!

This car is still around I might add. This one is pretty special mainly because it's a rare car and I met so many good people doing it! "
