Both cars featured the new chassis using the '65 Galaxy front clip mated to the Fairlane unibody. Power was provided by the 427 wedge with the new tunnelport intake manifold and 2 Holley 4 barrel carbs. It proved to be the winning combination. Dan Gurney, who had won the previous 4 races had switched from his usual Wood Brothers Ford to a Bud Moore Comet. The Comets did not use the same front suspension as the Fairlanes and had handling problems. Jones broke Gurney's streak. This same car, renumber as 15 was also driven to victory later in the year by Jones at Indianapolis Raceway Park in the USAC Yankee 250 road race.
This model was built in 1989 utilizing one of the first resin bodies I had cast. I used the MPC Southern Stocker chassis for most of the running gear. The intake manifold was also a resin casting. The numbers, sponsor and personal markings were all hand painted using sign painter's paint on decal film. Five years later decals for various Stroppe cars would be comercially available. This car was also the reason I came up with my Firestone gumball/Holman Moody rim combination. Jones was a Firestone dealer and rarely if ever ran on Goodyears. The engine is fully plumbed and wired. Solder was used for the exhaust headers."

(Note from Mr NASCAR: - As with Mike Madlinger, Chuck Poi was an inspiration to me to get into NASCAR modelling after seeing his work in Toledo in the '80's and '90's. Chuck is an original DarkSider! Chuck was also a major contributor to Motor Racing Replica News Magazine in its heyday, as the resident NASCAR expert. Thanks for sharing these great models, Chuck!
Here is info on Chuck's line of vintage resin NASCAR - his was the first resin I ever tried, with great results!:
From Chuck: "I offer resin cast bodies, kits, and parts of stock cars from '55-'72 under the name of Nostalgia Race Models. My email is Chuksducks@yahoo.com. My phone is 317-356-6770." )
