This model was built from the Monogram Kyle Petty Grand Prix kit, and SLIXX decals. SLIXX issued sets for all four variants - Bryan Meats, State Fair Corndogs, Rudy's Farm, and Jimmy Dean Sausages. These were the first '99 decals SLIXX put out, and they are dandies! Graphics are crisp, with gold leaf, and silver as needed, and they do an excellent job hiding the underlying colours.
The tricky part is to mask the curved areas on the sides that separate the two colours. By photocopying the decal sheet, I was able to cut out the shape and tape it in place as a template to guide placing of masking tape.
Usual detail bits - plug wires, valve stems, oil lines, radio cord, Earnhardt bar, fan-style exhausts - were added.
The final decalled body was coated with several light coats of TAMIYA TS13 clear, and polished out with TURTLE Wax.
So, how did the season unfold? Not so great... Poor Derricke seemed to have a real knack for placing the Bryan/State Fair/Rudy/Jimmy Dean Poncho in the wrong place at the wrong time, and most of the TV time he got showed smoking, twisted sheet metal... My standing joke was that I'd not likely get the model here finished before he was gone.. it was close...By season's end, Cope was gone, and Ryder had sold the team.
But 2000 is a new season. The new owners, Eel River Racing, have a new number, #27, and a big-time sponsor in Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, who are featuring their VIAGRA brand on the Ponch's haunches. Things are definitely on the rise!
