The "9"'s were laid out by hand (couldn't find a site where the same style "9" could be found, and didn't have anything but a picture of the car parked in the pits at Knoxville 06. Anyway, I laid it out and then printed it on white decal paper. I had made a template or stencil of the number out of masking material and placed it on the decal paper. Then I sprayed the racing orange on that. I removed the stencil after the paint cured and proceeded to coat it with acrylic clearcoat. Once that had cured I was ready to cut out the decal and place in the water just like normal.
I tried to hand letter the smaller stuff like the Southwest and Richwood. It looks good in person, but the camera flash shows variations in pigment due to the brush. If I had to do this over, instead of the paint I used, I would find a matching color of the vinyl upholtsery paint from an auto store. This would increase, I think, the longevity of the decal once prepared as it will stay flexible. You've probably used this stuff as I have for sealing decals on the vinyl tires found in kits like GMP's. The clear flat works really great. A couple of coats and you really can't tell it's a tire decal. (I haven't tried this - sounds like a GREAT idea! - Mr N.)
The car was Gary's 06 ASCS National Champion car. I don't think I have to say too much to sprint car nuts about Gary. I gave this car to Gary at Devil's Bowl last year when he won the 07 National Championship there at the Winternationals.
