After eyeballing the newly-released Taurus kit from REVELL, I came to the conclusion that with a little bit of a nose-job, and the right decals, it would be just as convincing as a FUSION as it is as a TAURUS. All I did was file down the "humps" a bit on each side of the front grille opening, and file off the front airdam grillework.
Sam had sent me the unique files for the FUSION grillwork, lights, and nomenclature a few weeks earlier, and I wanted a simple subject I could throw together to show off his artwork. I saw a shot of Carl's Daytona test car, that looked quite spiff, and since we had the OFFICE DEPOT graphics it was simple to cobble up the test car graphics. This was my first attempt at a FUSION body; not bad, but after closer review of pics in NASCAR SCENE, I concluded the the greenhouse around the rear sidewindows was not all that accurate.
This was a very simple build, the body was primed with white primer, then painted white. The bottom of the air dam was two-toned black and fluorescent orange, and the rear spoiler was painted black. The cowl was painted in grey primer. Then the decals were applied.

Once all the decals were in place, and had 24 hours or so to dry, I applied successive light coats of clear (TAMIYA TS13), again from a warmed rattle-can, and after a day of two to dry, I shot everything with TESTOR'S DULLCOTE to make it look like a primer job.
The chassis was built box-stock, except for seatbelts, and the mandated dashboard ignition tray - normally I use a piece from Modern Motorsports. To find out more about these and Modern Motorsports' other offerings, Click Here. But for this one I fabricated my own, using bits and pieces of Evergreen Plastic round and rectangular rod. Took a lot more time, but I must admit I'm coming to enjoy the "Scratchbuilding" aspect this provides...
You might ask, with that fancy test scheme, did the testing actually help Carl in the Daytona 500? Yes.. and no... The good news is he started in 5th place, thanks to a second-place finish in one of the Twin 125's. The bad news is he was taken out in a 78th-lap accident, so we'll never know. After all, as they say, "The real season begins after Daytona"....
