A NASCAR Odyssey by Mark Blocksdorf!!

MOORESVILLE on a Saturday Morning

(Note from Mr NASCAR: If you live in the Charlotte/Mooresville area, the following is old news... but if getting to South Carolina is akin to a pilgrimage (like for us Canadians...), then you will appreciate Mark's story!)

Story from Mark:

"I was perusing the amazing work that you have posted on the site, and something kinda caught my eye. You have a Michael Waltrip "cow car" posted (http://sites.nexusisp.com/lgsmirle/karolyn21.htm) from Karolyn Powell and it reminded me of a picture i had. OK, here's the story...

I was on a training course in Raleigh, NC in April 1999. It was the first time i'd been away for a full week and i was trying to think of things to do on the lay-over weekend, so i rented a car and decided to to "the loop". I went up across the top of NC going west, turned south at Statesville, and headed for the hallowed land - Mooresville! Right at the turn-off is an Industrial park called Lakeside Park. Sabco, Rusty Wallace Inc., Penske, Rudd Performance Motorsports just to name a few. It was a Saturday and a Busch race was running in Bristol, so no one was around - just the sweet sound of motors being broken in at Jasper Motors. I went to the Museum and saw pretty cool stuff there, but the best surprise was to come.

I drove to SimpsonWorld and found that it had closed just 20 minutes prior. A little dejected, i sat in the parking lot for a few minutes. I looked over to one side and saw a bunch of car roofs in a parking lot next to me. I drove around and this is what i saw:

(Notice Jeff Gordon's car is in a "handicapped" spot. Hee hee...)

I saw them from the SimpsonWorld parking lot just above them (where the trucks are). I found out later they were show cars and the building behind me was a marketing company. They were just sitting there!! I chickened out and only took pics from the car window - i realize now i probably could have gotten in the things!

Now the interesting pic for Karolyn is below:

There were these interesting cars off to one side (you can see them in the first pic). There is the unlettered Kelloggs car, the T-Bird and the chassisless cow car! It was pretty cool - it looked more like a Revellogram that had been popped off of its undercarriage. The T-bird was pretty torn apart too. One note - in the background is the Polaris factory (note the ATVs/sleds in boxes) with Butch Mock Motorsports right next door. Hmmm...wonder how Butch got that sponsorship on the 75 car....:-)

Anyway, i headed to Charlotte then Rockingham (680 miles later!). Go to Mooresville if you EVER get the chance. It was a great trip, and i wanted to share the cow pic with Karolyn.
