Quote from Chris:
"This car has a little of a story behind it also, that I have to tell. I went to my first race in 1986; it was the August Bristol night race. This car was in that race, and I fell in love with it. I took a photo of the car and I have had it ever since. I have wanted a model of this car in my collection for years. The only problem I have had was I could not find any numbers to match the car.

I buy the "junkyard auctions" on Ebay for useable parts. I bought an auction and when it arrived this unbuilt kit was in the auction, but was not on the auction list. At the time I had no use for it, I was looking through my old photos from Bristol and came across the photo. I knew it was time to built this car.

I e-mailed Mr. Nascar and asked for his help. Les asked for me to e-mail him the photo for him to take a look at. Les told me that he wouldn't have a problem with the numbers so I was off with the car. A couple of weeks later, I recieved a file from Les for me to take a look at, it was the numbers for the car you see now and they were dead on. I e-mailed him, we worked out the details and a couple of weeks later I got the numbers in the mail.

The car was painted with Testors competetion orange, then cleared with several coats of automotive clear. It was then rubbed out with a polishing kit, and buffed with Novus. The fender decals were from the WetWorks #3 85/87 Wrangler sheet. I plan on building the 1987 Wrangler so I used the 1985 fender decals on the car. The car was built completly box stock with no mods at all. I even left the the doors seams and bumper seams. The tire markings are from Shabo. I would like to take the time to thank Les, for his work on this car, without him it would not be possible. Les, I owe you a big one, Thank you."

(Note from Les/Mr N: "When I saw the photo I thought this was a sharp, simple-looking car, and it was fun to work with Chris to allow a model of it to be built. Chris, your model turned out great, it's always nice to see the end product.

I've done some digging, and I suspect the car was driven by Connie Saylor. It is not listed in the August race, but shows up in a Charlotte race as unsponsored. I was working from the 1987 NASCAR Press Guide - not sure how complete their listing info was back then... they only had 30 cars listed in the Bristol event...")

(Another Note from MR NASCAR:" Recently LYNN PETERS Sent some more info on the car. I feel like an Archeologist, as we sort this out!)

Note from Lynn Peters:
"I just happened upon your site while using Google Search to find some information on an old friend of ours.......the late Connie Saylor of Johnson City, TN. The model builder did a great job in recreating the # 99 car which was owned by Tennessee's Ralph Ball. Connie did drive that car for Ball on several occasions........first driving the car at Daytona in 1986. Connie did not, however, drive the car in the August race at Bristol where the model builder took the picture of the car. In that race, Brad Teague, also of Johnson City, TN, was the driver.

Connie Saylor was a very good friend of ours. He drove NASCAR Late Model Sportsman cars and ARCA cars which were owned by my wife and me during the period 1979 through 1980. After that, we helped out with various NASCAR Winston Cup deals he put together. Connie drove WC for such notables as G.C. Spencer, D.K. Ulrich, Chip Lane, Elmo Langley, Ken Ragan, Ralph Ball and the Morgan-McClure team. Connie was the first driver for the Morgan-McClure Motorsports organization.

Until Dale Earnhardt was injured in that horrendous flip during the mid-90's at Talledega, he had only used a relief driver one time in his career, and the driver Dale asked to relieve him was Connie Saylor......at Rockingham in the Wrangler Monte Carlo. Connie passed away at the age of 53, a victim of bone cancer, in the early 90's. He was a really good driver and a wonderful friend. Yep, we really enjoyed seeing Chris Kaufman's re-creation of that # 99 car, and he did an outstanding job on it! That photo sure brought back a lot of good memories."
